The SAT & ACT Coaches have proven track records of success with references from parents throughout Bergen County. Our Coaches begin with diagnostic testing to accurately assess their students' strengths and weaknesses, followed by a thorough review of the exam's content. Our Coaches are different because they develop expert strategies and techniques, putting their students through extensive practice, while helping students with test anxiety. We use the best materials and progressively correct our students' weaknesses by identifying subject matter most difficult to students and assigning practice exercises to strengthen those topics.
The SAT Writing and Language Test invites students to edit passages specifically written for the test – each passage includes errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and rhetoric. This section is repetitive and reuses the same 21 errors, so we train students to identify and correct these errors through extensive grammar review. The SAT makes grammatically incorrect sentences appear correct, so our Coaches teach students a variety of skills to successfully approach the SAT Writing Section including:
Comprehensive grammar review, including tricky rules that may not have been covered in school
Teach students to recognize agreement between subjects and verbs pronouns and antecedents
Maintain consistency in verb tense and pronoun usage
Recognize errors in comparison and parallelism
Correctly use punctuation including commas, semicolons, colons, apostrophes, and dashes
Understand sentence structure including use of coordination and subordination
Correctly employ the subjective and objective case of pronouns
Correct word choice to avoid usage errors
Places sentences in paragraphs in the most logical order
Students use our specially designed grammar exercises to recognize and correct the SAT's errors. Coaches test students on a weekly basis to identify evolving weaknesses and assign specific supplementary materials until students' target scores are achieved.
Our Coaches teach students to read carefully and assign daily reading practice. In addition, our Coaches assist students with a variety of important skill sets: time management, understanding how the author develops and supports arguments, finding evidence to back up answers, avoiding distracting answers, understanding author's main points, effectively tracking important supporting details, performing inferences to make conclusions based on what is stated in the text, understanding meaning of vocabulary in context, recognizing the author's craft and technique, analyzing data from graphs table, or chart.
During lessons, students must explain how they arrived at their conclusions, and Coaches guide students by offering demonstrations for all passage types. Students can repeatedly observe how each type of question is approached and learn to use the right technique for each question type. Through practice, students will internalize a powerful approach while increasing their speed, accuracy and confidence.
The SAT essay has been redesigned to evaluate a student’s capacity to explain how authors employ rhetoric to support their claims in news articles and academic journals. Our Coaches are experts in writing, and they help students in the following areas:
Reasoning to develop ideas and connect claims to the evidence
Analyzing elements of style and persuasion
Word choice to appeal to logic, ethics, and emotion
Adding emphasis to ideas to make them compelling
Understand rhetoric how author uses it to make effective argument
Avoiding mistakes in grammar, usage and mechanics
Our Coaches provide sample essays and demonstrations of analysis, so students can follow along easily. We teach using a template, so students can organize their ideas successfully during test day. Our Coaches identify their students' strengths and weaknesses as individual writers and correct them through revisions and supplemental activities. Students learn to use high level vocabulary and sentence structure to demonstrate exceptional facility in the use of language, use transition words to improve cohesion, and avoid words that are imprecise or repetitive. Most importantly, our Coaches demonstrate how to analyze rhetorical strategies in argumentative texts; therefore, students learn to read critically and use coherent analytical techniques to transform an effective reading into a compelling essay.
The ACT exam invites students to complete four individual sections, including English, Reading, Math, and Science. Many students switch from ACT to SAT simply because they find the science section too confusing or time consuming, yet students can master the ACT science section through practice and by understanding its core requirement to analyze visual data and informational paragraphs efficiently. Our Coaches have been teaching the ACT exam for close to a decade, and we leverage our deep knowledge of the exam and our experience coaching hundreds of students to peak percentiles in ACT, including many who score in 95th percentile each year.
We have helped hundreds of students achieve better grades, higher scores, and greater confidence.
